A plain guide to how legal fees work
Fixed fees, hourly rates and estimates, explained.

You should know what advice will cost before it starts. These are the three ways most firms charge.
Fixed fees
One price for a defined piece of work. Good for wills, leases and standard contracts.
Hourly rates
Charged by time spent. Common in disputes, where the work is hard to predict. Ask for regular updates against an estimate.
Estimates and caps
An estimate is a best guess. A cap is a limit. Ask which one you are being given.
